It almost happened to Mohamed Salah.

Egypt defeated Sierra Leone 2-0 in the second match of Group A of the 2026 FIFA World Cup North and Central America (U.S.-Mexico-Canada) Africa Zone Qualifiers at the Samuel Kanye Doe Sports Complex in Monrovia, Liberia, at 1 a.m. ET on Tuesday.
Salah started the match and was outstanding. He earned an assist in the 17th minute of the first half when he won the ball in the central area and fed an incoming Mahmoud Trezeguet, who slotted the ball into the back of the net.
Then, in the 44th minute of the second half, with the score 2-0, something happened. After the game, Salah was reportedly escorted off the field by local military officers. “The security team reacted quickly and wrestled the attackers to the ground, after which several soldiers escorted Salah safely off the field,” the media outlet said.
The quick response of the local security team and soldiers appears to have been key. “It is unclear what the intentions of the stadium invaders were, but the security team reacted strongly, throwing punches at the invaders as the game threatened to descend into chaos,” the media outlet reported. The calm response of the local security team in a situation that could have easily resulted in a major loss of life.
